Ciencia, Tecnología y Género en Iberoamérica: Problemas persistentes, miradas renovadas
Synopsis
“Science, Technology, and Gender in Ibero-America: Debates, Policies, and Practices” analyzes the relationship between science, technology, and gender from a critical perspective, demonstrating how social and cultural structures influence the production of scientific knowledge. The field of Science, Technology, and Gender (STG) studies is an interdisciplinary domain arising from the intersection of social studies of science and feminism; it challenges the notion that science and technology are entirely neutral or objective. From this viewpoint, both are understood to be shaped by values, power dynamics, and historical contexts that condition their development and outcomes.
Based on various analyses, the book proposes a rethinking of science through the lens of STG studies and feminist epistemologies. This approach brings to light the prejudices and biases that have historically produced exclusions, stigmatizations, and even forms of scientific ignorance. In response, the text highlights the need to integrate diverse experiences and promote a different kind of scientific objectivity—one based on the inclusion of voices that have been historically marginalized.
The originality of the text lies in its critical, interdisciplinary approach to the relationship between science, technology, and gender within the Ibero-American context. It does not limit itself to describing gender inequality in science; rather, it examines how social, cultural, and political factors influence the production of scientific and technological knowledge.
Furthermore, the volume combines empirical studies with theoretical reflections on topics such as symbolic violence within universities, care policies in academic institutions, biases in medical research, or ethical debates surrounding surrogacy, showing how a gender perspective allows for the reinterpretation of scientific and technological phenomena through a more inclusive and socially committed lens. Ultimately, the work proposes transforming scientific culture toward a model that is more pluralistic, democratic, inclusive, and socially responsible.
