Introduction: Contributions of the Humanities to the Development of the Argentinean Society
Synopsis
There is a growing social consensus around the importance of knowledge for human development. Such an agreement, however, tends to privilege fields that promise immediate economic returns or competitive advantages in the global market, sidelining other areas of knowledge, such as the humanities, which are less profitable in the short term.
This exclusion of the humanities from the priority areas of public knowledge must rest, normatively, on one of two assumptions. Either one assumes that assets such as democracy, the rule of law, and human rights are not important for the development of societies; or one recognizes their value but presumes that these goods emerge spontaneously, without the need for professional intellectual work. This book seeks to dismantle both arguments. The contributions gathered here show how professional work in the humanities can help improve the lives of individuals and societies—sometimes indirectly, but no less concretely for that.
The volume is addressed to a broad audience and aims to offer a philosophical analysis of various practical problems that arise in today’s world. The essays included in the book first identify an issue of particular practical relevance, then provide a philosophical analysis of that issue, and finally highlight philosophical resources that may help address it. In all cases, the practical relevance of the problem is explained, connecting it to real-world scenarios or to the design of public and institutional policies.
